WORK EXPERIENCE

Senior Analyst II 9/2008 – Present DB Consulting Group / NASA Glenn Research Center

Serves as the system administrator for a production and development web hosting environment for the Research and Technology Directorate (Code R) at the NASA Glenn Research Center. In order to implement a policy that was created, all new websites related to Code R functions must be housed in this environment. Existing sites (25+) have already been migrated. All servers have been configured to meet and exceed NASA information technology guidelines. Security implementations and procedures have passed numerous external audits.

Developed a NASA information architecture and user interface design-based theme for the WordPress content management system. The WordPress theme has provided a mechanism for rapid web development. Site development times have been reduced dramatically. All new web development under Code R is utilizing this technology and existing sites are being migrated. The event management system was migrated and reduced conference registration site development times from a couple of days to a couple of hours.

Ongoing lead developer for the NASA Award Tracking System (ATS.) ATS is an online, database-driven, Internet web application that allows NASA Research Announcement (NRA) managers of the Fundamental Aeronautics Program across the Agency to access financial information quickly, easily, and accurately. Data is imported from multiple databases to provide a central location for access. All work is verified and validated by members of the team.

Reduced the operating costs of the Code R server environment by consolidating physical servers to virtual machines. Utilizing free software, consolidated five physical servers into one virtual machine for the Project Liaison & Integration Office while maintaining identical functionality.

Implemented and maintains a subversion (svn) repository for the NASA CoNNeCT Project Team. Enterprise level project management software was installed to aid in the development, bug tracking, and testing of the project while supporting collaboration between team members. Overall development time has been decreased.

Implemented and maintains multiple online web analytics systems. The systems allow for easy manipulation of visitor information on Code R hosted websites. Reports are generated for management to review and to aid in better web implementation practices.

Implemented Splunk, a server log monitoring and reporting tool. Splunk consolidates log files, metrics, and other data from application servers and network devices into an easily searchable online interface. Splunk has reduced the time required to monitor server log files and provides an alert mechanism for verifying the status of web servers.

Application Programmer III 9/2000 – 8/2008 Wyle Information Systems / NASA Glenn Research Center

Served as lead Internet web developer and computing team lead for the Ultra-Efficient Engine Technology (UEET) and Vehicle Systems programs at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Based on the assessment of the programs needs, designed, developed, and implemented a centralized production web host environment to support outreach efforts and business functions. This included the creation of computing platform independent web based games, public and internal websites, and web applications.

Developed the Secure File Transfer (SFT) online web application to aid in the transfer of large files securely between NASA and external partners. Utilizing open source software technologies allowed the reduction to the overall cost of the system’s development and management. SFT was created using the central web hosting environment setup above following NASA policy, including Section 508. Files are sent to the SFT utilizing a secure socket layer (SSL) connection. Files are then encrypted with a PIN for local storage on the web host. Files can only be retrieved using the generated PIN. The SFT has been integrated in the Center’s Export Control policy for securely transferring files to foreign entities. There are over 2,600 unique users that depend on the SFT to complete their daily tasks.

Served as lead with a team of graphic designers and educators to create educational games for children. Efficient planning along with effective communication skills allowed for the projects to meet milestones on time and deliver a quality product. Games were created to inspire students in science and technology.

Developed a central web management system in Linux utilizing a load balanced Apache web server environment. This included a mirrored production and development setup. All servers followed a strict implementation and backup policy. Monitoring software was installed to meet uptime goals.

Created numerous (20+) static and dynamic websites for NASA programs and projects with hypertext markup language (HTML), PHP, and the MySQL database. All sites were developed under NASA policy, including Section 508. Content management systems were utilized to provide a streamlined creation and updating mechanism.

Developed a dynamic event management system to support the Agency and Center’s needs to host meetings and conferences. Supported conferences in excess of 500 participants. This included the development of a system to invite attendees, collect registrant information, and generate reports. Worked closely with the Center’s Conference Liaison to determine the needs and expectations of the customer.

Created a standardized documentation format policy to aid in the organization of computing activities. Security policy implementation, code writing best practices, and configuration file management were all documented.
